How To: Crochet Up-cycle Jeans

For those of you just looking for the pattern, scroll down to “pattern:”

I had this great idea to up-cycle a dress but knew that would take a long time and then another idea sparked. UP-CYCLE JEANS!!

I had an old pair of light jeans that were tight around the ankle. I only wear flare pants or yoga pants so I thought, “how can I transform these jeans into a flare style?” One thing lead to the next and I did it!

So let’s start with how I cut the jeans. I started with the jeans on and got a grey washable marker to mark where to cut. I felt for my kneecap and drew a grey “V”. After laying my pants flat, I then angled my scissors on one side of my jeans to match up with the angle of the “V” and began cutting. When I got to the middle tip of the “V” I angled my scissors to match the angle of the other side of the “V” and finished cutting.

The next part wasn't fun… IF you have a very small hole puncher, that would be super helpful for this next step. I didn't so here’s what I did:

With my large needle, I poked a hole through 3/4 of an inch away from the edge on a side the jeans.

I pulled a yarn loop through and chained 2. I then poked another hole a half a cm away and did a SC in that little hole. I repeated this until the tip of the “^” and poked a hole in the middle of the “^”. I SC then chained 2 and then SC in the same hole. (abbreviations are further down if you don't know what SC is)

I continued poking a hole and SC until the next “^” and repeat the same steps I did for the first side. Then I continued poking a hole and SC until the first SC.

SL ST in the first SC. I then did a row of double crochet and at both of the “^”, I double crocheted (DC), chained 1, and double crocheted. I continued double crocheting until the next “^” tip and repeated the DC, CH2, DC.

For the next rows I just repeated the granny square stitch’s (3 DC and CH1 between the set of 3) for the larger sections and then used a light blue #3 weight yarn to separate the granny square stitch sections. I did rows of just double crochet or single crochet (SC) with the light blue yarn.

These jeans took me a long while to make, but they really did turn out so cute! I hope you enjoy this pattern!

IMPORTANT FOR THOSE USING THE PATTERN: For those of you who may not be using the same yarn as me, the first beige section is 7.5 cm long. The brown section is 2 cm long. The white section is 5 cm long and the long beige section is 23 cm in length. Keep in mind this is based off of my height and I am 5'6. You may want to add more length to your sections if you’re taller than 5’6 or lessen rows if you’re under 5’6.

Continue poking a hole 1/2 cm away until the tip of the “V”. Poke a hole in the middle of the tip of the “V”. In the hole, Sc, ch 2, sc. Then proceed poking holes and sc until the next “V”. Repeat, poke hole in “V”, sc, ch 2, sc. Continue poking holes and sc until the end of the row. At the end of the row sl st into the first sc.
